video/sculpture installation,
two video monitors (15”), shelves, VHS tapes, sculpture made of Japanese tissue, acrylic media, coloured balls, thread
size variable
This video/sculpture installation consists of 2 video loops on 2 monitors and one sculpture. The upper monitor shows an 8-minute video of a close up of a young child watching intently. The lower monitor shows a video of the same length, and the continuous sequence shows hands selecting buttons, threading a needle and sewing 3 buttons onto a patterned surface. The buttons are sewn on in a facial configuration. Below the 2 monitors is a sculpture the same approximate shape and dimensions of the video monitors. It is constructed from layers of patterned Japanese tissue sewn together. Inside is over a hundred coloured balls. The surface of the tissue obscures the viewing of the balls, although the colours are visible, and the sphere of the balls suggested and appearing as large dots of colour.
