Being Tree
Being Tree is a series of paintings and also the title of an exhibition I had at Sivarulrasa Gallery in 2023. (Some of the paintings from 2020/1 were included in the the exhibition.)
I started these paintings during covid when I was walking more and reading more. Reading books such as Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass, Merlin Sheldrake’s Entangled Life, Robert Macfarlane’s Underland. After reading Finding The Mother Tree by Suzanne Simard, I became intrigued by how trees communicate and nurture each other.
Walking is a way to weave together the ideas from reading, observations, memory. And as I usually walk in large parks in cities, I weave natural and built worlds; the paintings weave together observation, readings, memory, connections between trees and me.
